Vasectomy

What Is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy, also known as male sterilization, is a minor surgical procedure designed to prevent sperm from mixing with the semen ejaculated from the penis. This safe, effective, and permanent form of birth control allows men to prevent pregnancy without the need for additional contraceptives.

After a vasectomy, your testes continue to produce sperm, but your body naturally absorbs it. You will still ejaculate the same amount as before, but without the risk of pregnancy. This means you can enjoy greater peace of mind and enhanced sexual freedom without the concern of unintended conception.

Is a Vasectomy Right for You?

Deciding to undergo a vasectomy is a deeply personal choice. If you have a partner, discussing the procedure with them is recommended to ensure you’re both on the same page. Many men find a vasectomy to be a liberating experience, as it removes the stress of accidental pregnancy and allows for greater intimacy.

While vasectomy reversal is possible in some cases, it is not always guaranteed. Therefore, it’s important to be certain about your decision before proceeding.

It’s also important to note that a vasectomy does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Using condoms remains essential for reducing the risk of infection.

Types of Vasectomy Procedures

At Auxo Clinic, our highly experienced medical team offers advanced vasectomy procedures using state-of-the-art microsurgical techniques. Depending on your health history and goals, your provider may recommend:

Standard Vasectomy

  • The surgeon makes two small incisions in the scrotum.
  • A portion of the vas deferens (the tubes that transport sperm) is carefully removed.
  • The ends of the vas deferens are sealed and sutured.
  • The incisions are closed using dissolvable stitches.

This 30-minute outpatient procedure is performed under sedation for comfort. Patients typically experience little to no pain during or after the surgery, thanks to advanced techniques used by our team.

Vasectomy Reversal

If you previously had a vasectomy but now wish to restore fertility, a vasectomy reversal may be an option.

  • During this procedure, the vas deferens are reconnected, allowing sperm to once again mix with semen.
  • When successful, this restores natural fertility, enabling you to conceive.

Although vasectomy reversals are possible, they are not always effective. If you are considering this option, a consultation with a specialist is essential to determine if you’re a good candidate.

Does a Vasectomy Require Anesthesia?

At Auxo Clinic, patient comfort is a top priority. Our team ensures a calm and supportive environment throughout the procedure. Most patients receive light sedation, meaning they remain relaxed and unaware during the surgery.

Recovery is typically quick, with most men returning to normal activities within a few days.

What to Expect During Recovery

Many patients are surprised by the short recovery time following a vasectomy. Most men feel fully recovered within 8-9 days. However, it is crucial to avoid sexual activity until completely healed to prevent complications.

Important Considerations Post-Surgery

  • A vasectomy does not immediately eliminate sperm from semen.
  • It may take up to three months for semen to become sperm-free.
  • During this time, continue using birth control to prevent pregnancy.

If you have any concerns during your recovery, our team at Auxo Clinic is available to provide guidance, support, and additional resources.

“Finding Dr Michel's office was the best thing that could have happened after being immensely dissatisfied with UCLA and Cedars. I was about to give up and settle into complacency, but Dr Nourian, Lina, and Tony have been incredible. The clinic has a ton of services and the staff is very friendly.”
